Our next conversation in the series features Paula Gaffney, Company Accountant of Ardgowan Distillery.
What is the biggest challenge facing the sector at present?
One of the biggest challenges in finance today is managing uncertainty, driven by rising costs and political instability. In the whisky industry, we are particularly affected by shifting global trade patterns and the need to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes, both in the UK and internationally, as trade tariffs and tax regulations continue to change.
Who inspires you in your career?
I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some incredible mentors, however if I had to choose, it would be my parents, Jim and Morag. Their work ethic, resilience, and passion for learning have always inspired me to work hard and embrace lifelong learning.
What’s the most important risk you took in your career and why?
Joining the whisky industry represented a significant shift, transitioning from a more traditional finance role to a highly specialised sector. The key motivator behind my decision was the potential for growth in such a fascinating and deeply rooted Scottish industry. As someone local to Ardgowan Distillery, I also feel incredibly proud to be part of this remarkable investment in the local community.
What advice would you give to your younger self coming into the profession?
A successful career in finance goes beyond mastering technical skills and obtaining professional qualifications. It is equally important to develop abilities such as decision-making, leadership, and effective communication.
What one thing makes you most proud?
Recently, I’m most proud of my transition into the whisky industry and becoming a contributing member of the team at Ardgowan. It’s been incredibly rewarding to apply my knowledge in supporting key business decisions during this exciting time as we approach the commissioning stage.
