The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh (the Merchant Company) is a charitable organisation for business and professional people which has been enriching the life of Scotland’s capital for more than 340 years. The original purpose of the Company was to protect trading rights in the city and, over the centuries, it has evolved into a membership organisation with a wide range of activities.
The Company and its institutions as a group form one of Scotland’s largest charitable organisations, and delivers charitable benefits through education, enterprise, and in helping the elderly, young and frail. It is also an active membership organisation, which provides social and personal development opportunities through a variety of initiatives and events. The Company plays a central role in the civic life of Edinburgh and is Scotlands’s pre-eminent livery company.
Over the last 12-18 months a new Strategic Plan for the Company has been developed and it is now in the early stages of its implementation. The plan provides a clear road map for achieving our objectives, and is arranged around three main strategic pillars: Charity; Members; and Company. Briefly, the plan is to increase the quantity and quality of the charitable contribution we make, to enhance the membership experience for our members, and to secure the ongoing relevance and viability of the Company as an active, 21st century organisation. Our actions in each of these areas are underpinned by our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
This is an exciting period for the Company, and a most opportune moment to strengthen our team through the appointment of a new Membership, Events and Communications Manager. The person we appoint will play a crucial role in the implementation of our plans and in helping us meet the challenges which lie ahead. The role has a very broad remit across several disciplines and functions and is of critical importance to the delivery of our ambitions.

Following the development of the new Strategic Plan, we are looking for a Membership, Events & Communications Manager, to continue guiding us through an exciting phase of modernization. This is a unique role that doesn’t come around often.
We are a small team, but very much live by a “one team” ethos as we support each other to achieve our goals. If you are an experienced Membership, Events & Communications professional and excited by the opportunity to implement your ideas, this could be for you.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
This role is well-suited to someone with extensive management experience across Membership, Events and Communications activities. If you’ve worked within a membership organisation that would be a bonus but is by no means essential. This is very much on the individual – we’re keen to speak to someone who is keen to take ownership and help them through this exciting period.
You will be predominantly office-based from our lovely location on Hanover Street with some out of hours working at events.
If this sounds like you and you’d like to join The Merchant Company on the next stage of their journey, get in touch now with Scott @ Denholm.
If you would like any information about this opportunity with The Royal Company of Merchants of The City of Edinburgh, please get in touch with Denholm Associates today.
Thank you.

As well as working in close collaboration with our clients, and the online marketplaces, we are active members of groups that have been established to combat illicit trade. These include the Scottish Anti-Illicit Trade Group, the European Intellectual Property Office, The Scottish Business Resilience Centre, the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, and the China Britain Business Council. Members of our senior management sit on the boards of ACID (Anti-Copying in Design), the Scottish Ministerial Trade Board, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s Observatory Panel for SMEs, amongst others.
Each team member nominates good causes or charities that are supported on both an individual and corporate basis. Wherever possible, we support the employee’s involvement whether through time or fundraising events.
We deliver purpose-driven work from an extremely welcoming environment near the City Centre. We actively encourage the responsible use of resources, from using public transport to reuse, recycling, and, of course, a minimal impact office environment. We have benefited from the advice of the Energy Saving Trust and Resource Efficient Scotland. Our waste contractor also provides us with a monthly report on volumes and types of material and the carbon emissions avoided through recycling.
Over 80% of our employees can walk or cycle to The Lair and, pre-pandemic, 10% were using public transport as their normal daily commuting mode. Without doubt, online meetings will replace considerable miles, going forward, saving resources, time and energy. Where possible, when possible, the train remains our preferred option.
Our people are our most important asset, and their mental well-being and happiness are core to our success. We love our diverse workforce, actively embrace flexible working (even pre-pandemic!) and encourage a healthy work-life balance. We have been recognised as one of the most diverse SME workplaces in the UK and are holders of the Scottish Business Pledge which exists to promote a fairer Scotland. We have also just been included in the 2021 Culture Leaders Top 25 – an accolade of which we are very proud!
We are a fully inclusive and nurturing employer and, despite being in tech, the majority of our team are women, leading to accolades in the Computing Magazine Women in IT Awards and the Amazon Growing Business Awards. We currently represent 15 nationalities and speak 20 languages. Age is no barrier, and we recruit for attitude, providing and encouraging appropriate learning and training for each and every role.
We are also proud members of IP Inclusive, a network of professionals working to make the intellectual property industry more diverse.
Our aim is to combat illicit online trade by identifying and removing counterfeits for sale. Counterfeits not only damage brands, their reputations, and revenues, but can cause significant harm to the end customer – whether as a fake toy or a fake medicine – and the consequences can be life threatening.
Counterfeiting is a significant economic and social issue.
The OECD reports that counterfeit and fake goods make up more than 3.3% of the world’s global trade. Those involved in the trade of counterfeits have been linked to people trafficking, prostitution, and drug dealing.
As such, reducing illicit trade is about much more than brand protection but also about human rights, safety, and social equity.
And this is what we do, every day.
