Whether you’re searching for a more rewarding career, want to drive change in your community or feel compelled to make a social impact – this could be the place for you.
“Every day I get to direct my professional communication skills and expertise to work that I am passionate about and which fully aligns with my values.
That is hugely motivating and gives me a strong sense of self-worth. My team and I know that our work is playing a crucial part in supporting children and their families to get the help they need.
That inspires us and pushes us to stay at the top of our game. It means we prioritise creativity, strategy and constant learning and development to make the biggest difference we can for children, families, communities and society.”
Harriet Hall, Head of Communications and Marketing at Children 1st
We work with a number of charities and social enterprises who are tackling everything from period poverty, mental health, homelessness and more – and they are all looking for someone with a passion for their purpose.

So how do you get into the third sector?
1. The first step to joining a Not-for-Profit could be as simple as volunteering. But where do you start?
CHECKLIST:
- Find the cause you want to support
- Do your research! Identify the organisations that promote these causes
- Get in touch. Visit their website or just give them a call and find out how you can start volunteering
- Now you can get the insight you’re looking for into the charity sector before you make the leap. As a volunteer, you can take the opportunity to see what it’s like being part of their team and find out how they operate
2. Then, when you do find the right organisation for you, get to know the team you’re interested in working with. Ask questions. What are the skill gaps in the organisation that you can fill?
Showing your dedication and providing solutions will make you invaluable.
3. The next step is to keep a close eye on any roles coming up and let team members know you want to apply, so one of the team can recommend your application. (Recommendations are always powerful when you’re applying for a job.)
4. Whether you start as a volunteer or you saw the perfect job on Good Moves, once you’ve found the job you want, it’s time to focus on your CV. Make sure the skills and experience you’re highlighting specifically relate to the job description. Articulate your CV in a way that clearly shows the benefits of you being in this job. Use examples of your achievements throughout your CV, and start with an impactful statement about how you want to support this organisation’s mission.
5. They will look for experience that’s suitable to the role you’re applying for but there is a bit more flexibility around education. So make sure to list your qualifications, certificates and volunteer experience. And don’t be shy about sharing commercial experience, charities want to be successful too!
TOP TIPS FOR UPSKILLING:
If you notice any skill gaps in your CV when you’re applying for roles check out these upskilling academies:
- Google Garage
- LinkedIn Learning
- Udemy
Now that you have the tools you need to stand out – be persistent. You may not get the first role you apply for but don’t let that discourage you from pursuing your aspirations of working with a company that gives back.
