The founding principle at the heart of the Fringe is to be an open access festival that accommodates anyone with a desire to perform and a venue willing to host them. No single individual or committee determines who can or cannot perform at the Fringe; the Fringe Society does not run any venues or programme any performers.
The Fringe Society supports and encourages anyone who wants to take part – all the amazing artists, producers, venues, arts industry professionals and members of the media. From choosing a venue to creating a successful marketing campaign, the Fringe Society is on hand all year round with one-to-one tailored advice, events, facilities and online resources.
The Fringe Society provides ticketing through a centralised box office, offering tickets to every show on the Fringe, and a wealth of information via the official Fringe Programme, website and mobile app. We continuously improve and expand our services to ensure the best possible experience for Fringe audiences, and reach out via our community, learning and access initiatives to ensure that everyone who wants to attend the Fringe is able to.
The Fringe Society markets the Fringe in its entirety – locally, nationally and internationally – to participants, the public, media and arts industry to retain its position as the world’s leading arts festival. As well as delivering a high-profile annual marketing and media campaign, the Society works closely with media outlets all over the world to maximise publicity for the Fringe.
The Edinburgh International Festival was an initiative created to celebrate and enrich European cultural life in the wake of the Second World War.
Not being part of the official programme of the International Festival didn’t stop these performers, they just went ahead and staged their shows on the fringe of the Festival anyway, coining the phrase and our name – the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since the dawn of this spontaneous artistic movement, millions have flocked to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to produce, and to enjoy art of every genre.
Be the best place in the world for emerging artists to perform and the best platform for talent to emerge
Eradicate any remaining unfair or exploitative work conditions at the Fringe
Become a carbon net zero event by 2030
Who you are and where you are from is not a barrier to attending or performing at the Edinburgh Fringe
The Fringe, a force for good in and for the city of Edinburgh
Enhance the live Fringe experience by ensuring a world-class digital experience
As we emerge from the significant impact of Covid on the culture and events sector, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society faces a significant and ongoing challenge in stabilising the future of our own organisation and rebuilding for the future; a Fringe Society and Fringe committed to our core principles of access, fairness, inclusion, sustainability, aligned to our Vision and Values and Fringe Development Goals.
Work with us and play your part in the world’s greatest celebration of arts and culture.
The Fringe Society is proud to be a Disability Confident Employer and we aim to successfully employ and retain disabled people and people with health conditions. As part of this commitment we offer a guaranteed interview to all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for an advertised role.
We’re an accredited Living Wage Employer, committed to paying all our staff – both seasonal and permanent – the Living Wage or higher.
The Fringe Society is looking for a senior fundraising and development expert to lead us to success in three key areas; public funding and trust funding; individual giving, from Fringe Friends to International Donors; and maximising opportunities for funding and support for the wider Fringe. You will seek and grow new investment across these three key areas.
You will manage key relationships with funding bodies, trusts and foundations and individual donors, as well as developing and nurturing new relationships for the long term. You will utilise the strategic ambitions of the Development Goals to build engagement and investment in the Fringe Society’s charitable activities.
You’ll lead on all of the Fringe Society’s marketing and campaign activities, working with an in-house team and external agencies and partners, to showcase the Fringe to the world and attract diverse artists and audiences from across the globe. You’ll ensure the small charity that underpins the Fringe and holds the core brand has the marketing and communication skills and resources in place to deliver the best service possible to a wide range of stakeholders.
Following the 75th anniversary celebrations, and as the Society continues to recover from the pandemic, you will help continue to position the Fringe as a truly global festival rooted in Edinburgh and Scotland. Working across the charity you will lead on the development and rollout of a variety of activities, tailored to a wide range of audiences – from the general public to artists, local communities and residents, stakeholders, sponsors and policymakers.

As well as working in close collaboration with our clients, and the online marketplaces, we are active members of groups that have been established to combat illicit trade. These include the Scottish Anti-Illicit Trade Group, the European Intellectual Property Office, The Scottish Business Resilience Centre, the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, and the China Britain Business Council. Members of our senior management sit on the boards of ACID (Anti-Copying in Design), the Scottish Ministerial Trade Board, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s Observatory Panel for SMEs, amongst others.
Each team member nominates good causes or charities that are supported on both an individual and corporate basis. Wherever possible, we support the employee’s involvement whether through time or fundraising events.
We deliver purpose-driven work from an extremely welcoming environment near the City Centre. We actively encourage the responsible use of resources, from using public transport to reuse, recycling, and, of course, a minimal impact office environment. We have benefited from the advice of the Energy Saving Trust and Resource Efficient Scotland. Our waste contractor also provides us with a monthly report on volumes and types of material and the carbon emissions avoided through recycling.
Over 80% of our employees can walk or cycle to The Lair and, pre-pandemic, 10% were using public transport as their normal daily commuting mode. Without doubt, online meetings will replace considerable miles, going forward, saving resources, time and energy. Where possible, when possible, the train remains our preferred option.
Our people are our most important asset, and their mental well-being and happiness are core to our success. We love our diverse workforce, actively embrace flexible working (even pre-pandemic!) and encourage a healthy work-life balance. We have been recognised as one of the most diverse SME workplaces in the UK and are holders of the Scottish Business Pledge which exists to promote a fairer Scotland. We have also just been included in the 2021 Culture Leaders Top 25 – an accolade of which we are very proud!
We are a fully inclusive and nurturing employer and, despite being in tech, the majority of our team are women, leading to accolades in the Computing Magazine Women in IT Awards and the Amazon Growing Business Awards. We currently represent 15 nationalities and speak 20 languages. Age is no barrier, and we recruit for attitude, providing and encouraging appropriate learning and training for each and every role.
We are also proud members of IP Inclusive, a network of professionals working to make the intellectual property industry more diverse.
Our aim is to combat illicit online trade by identifying and removing counterfeits for sale. Counterfeits not only damage brands, their reputations, and revenues, but can cause significant harm to the end customer – whether as a fake toy or a fake medicine – and the consequences can be life threatening.
Counterfeiting is a significant economic and social issue.
The OECD reports that counterfeit and fake goods make up more than 3.3% of the world’s global trade. Those involved in the trade of counterfeits have been linked to people trafficking, prostitution, and drug dealing.
As such, reducing illicit trade is about much more than brand protection but also about human rights, safety, and social equity.
And this is what we do, every day.
